AUI is by design and mission a highly internationalized university. The Office of International Programs (OIP) is the liaison for the university’s academic partnerships and manages the University’s educational cooperation and collaboration agreements with select global academic institutions. The University’s programs foster an international perspective through the curriculum and on-campus experience and encourage students to study abroad for at least a semester as part of their education.
To that end, the OIP advises AUI undergraduates and graduate students about studying abroad and administers several programs in 400+ institutions in more than 50 countries around the world. There are a wide range of study abroad programs for AUI students. The bilateral and multilateral exchange programs are the most popular and designed for undergraduate students to exchange places with students from other institutions with which the university agrees. The exchange programs are for one semester but may be longer in specific situations. Financial aid can often apply to exchange programs. Students can also take Planned Educational Leave (PEL) at approved institutions for no more than two semesters. The general maximum a student can have on exchange or PEL is a full calendar year, i.e., two semesters and a summer session. For AUI graduate students, study abroad opportunities are determined by each degree program. These programs are administered by the OIP and have different criteria. Thus, students are encouraged to read the announcements and plan for their studies abroad by working with the OIP’s outbound study abroad advisor. In general, students and parents are welcome to stop by the Office of International Programs in Building 10.
In addition to study abroad opportunities, the OIP also manages online courses at external institutions though a range of approved institutions and providers. These online courses are available to AUI students with specific situations or needs.
For all study abroad and online programs, the credits which the student obtains at the host university can be transferred to AUI provided the student successfully completes courses for which approval has been given by the AUI faculty.
The OIP also works with Schools and other units to share international internship opportunities.
Post-AUI, information and opportunities for international programs such as certificates, masters, or doctoral studies are shared with students in a variety of ways.
Beyond these programs, the OIP supports all international students on campus, promotes internationalization at home, and manages a range of special projects and programs.
