AUI Student Handbook

Professional attire is expected of all AUI community members, particularly in classrooms and offices. To maintain a respectful environment, smart-casual or modest business casual dress is recommended. This means avoiding revealing clothing. Remember, the way you dress reflects on the university, so dess with pride and professionalism to make a positive impression throughout campus. AUI’s campus is divided into two Dress Code Zones: The Administrative and Academic Zone denoted in red on the campus map below, and the Student Life Zone as follows:

       The Student Life Zone on campus includes the roads and pathways from the university gate, the parking areas, the residential areas, the sports, gym, tennis, and pool facilities, Proxy restaurant, the Post office and the Health Center. The following guidelines are to be considered in this area:

 

 

Acceptable Attire:

  • Pajamas or comfortable clothing that covers at least 10cm above the knees and up to the chest, neck, or shoulders.
  • Flip flops and slippers.
  • Sportswear, including appropriate sports tops and bottoms even if short or cropped.

Unacceptable Attire:

  • Clothing considered underwear like bras, briefs and such, and see-through materials revealing undergarments.

      The Administrative and Academic Zone includes the AUI Shop, the restaurants in building 3, the coffee shop, offices and student services (Registrar, Admissions, Student Affairs, the Business Office, the Writing center and the CLE, etc.) as well as classrooms, laboratories, and auditoriums. The following guidelines are to be considered in this area:

Acceptable Attire:

  • Proper outer-wear sandals (no plastic wear, no beach sandals).
  • Tops and shirts with coverage of shoulders or shoulder straps on both shoulders.
  • Shorts, dresses, and skirts with a minimum length of 10 cm above the knees.

Unacceptable Attire:

  • Pajamas.
  • Pantoffles (slippers).
  • Tops showing cleavage or bare shoulders (unless accompanied by an over-theshoulder cardigan).
  • Crop-tops showing the belly button or lower back.
  • Mesh, lace, stringy, or see-through clothing.
  • Clothing resembling underwear, lingerie, or briefs.
  • Clothing with holes around the thighs, groin, buttocks, or mid-section.
  • Depending on the faculty’s preference, it is advised not to put the hood on in class.

 

 

 

 

Disclaimer:

The Health Center will not refuse to provide services based on the dress code but may register a complaint to the DSA’s office for major dress code breaches. However, all other AUI Offices may refuse to provide a service until the student can change into dress-code compliant attire.
